Education, Education,Education

"Ask me my three main priorities for government and I will tell you: education, education, education."

These are the famous words of former British Prime Minister, Tony Blair. Now whether or not you think he delivered on his promise, is for you to debate. There's no mistaking however, that education to the highest level, is essential if you're looking to gain access to a certain level of society, and something the 'new' black woman must make a priority.

Getting a good education, is one of the easiest and quickest ways of climbing up the social ladder and the more prestigious the institution, the better. Unfortunately,  it can also be very expensive, but there are plenty of ways to educate and develop your mind for free.

1.Swap Your Skills

Instead of paying to  learn a skill, swap one of your talents with someone else. Lets assume you know how to bake, and one of your friends can speak a second language. Why not agree to teach your friend to bake, if she'll teach you the basics of that language.

There are now numerous 'swap your skills' websites that allow you to find people in your local area that may be able to help you learn something, if you can equally help them out in return. As always though, take the usual precautions if you're going to meet an internet acquittance for the first time.

Asides from that, see if there's anyone in your immediate circle willing to help you learn new skills, chances are, they'll help you without asking for anything in return.

2.The Library

Reading is one of the best ways of building your vocabulary and writing skills (that is of course if you're reading the right books). Look for books you find enjoyable, but also take time to find a place in your heart for the Classics and any non-fiction subjects you may find interesting.

Some libraries also offer additional services like career advice and free workshops.

3. The Internet

Youtube, Google, Wikipedia and good old Ask Jeeves. The internet is full of great learning resources on every subject you can think of.

Read articles, watch tutorials and connect with like minded people to help you achieve your goals.

4.Museums & Art Galleries

Some museums and galleries may have a small entry fee, but most are free to view. Guided tours, seminars and lectures are also often available.  Find out if any offer membership,  these usually come with discounts to exhibitions and other activities on offer.

5.Scholarships

Research scholarships on offer at various high schools,  colleges and universities. Find out exactly what it is each institution is looking for in a prospective student and do your best to meet that criteria.

6.Television

My personal worst enemy, but even so, this little glowing box can often be helpful, if you're watching the right programs. In fact, just the other night there was a show on about 'how to be a lady', and the history of being a lady!

I tend to stick to the educational, documentary and art channels, but have a scan around other channels to see if there's anything mind enhancing to watch, you may be surprised at what you find. One evening, I came across an Opera being aired on a totally non-arts related channel!

I hope that helps you out my beauties, my next post will be about my upcoming e-course, so stay tuned. :) x
